⚓ Sailing with Columbus and Spelling on the High Seas with Big Red!

Ahoy, mates! 🏴‍☠️
This week our classroom set sail on a spelling adventure that started with Christopher Columbus and ended with a red, shaggy dog! While we were learning about brave sailors crossing the ocean blue, Captain Brenda and her crew decided to practice our words pirate-style!

We opened the story “Big Red” from The Good and the Beautiful and met a cheerful pup with a tail that never quits wagging. Then we put on our pirate hats, practiced our spelling words slowly and clearly, and learned to spell with confidence — and a few hearty “Yo-ho-ho’s!” along the way.

🐶 Words we spelled: big, red, dog, wag, sad, can, sit, go, yes, nap

🎵 The kids played their bucket drums along to “Three Ships Sailed the Ocean Blue.

Afterward, they built their own ships! Each child used the bottom of a detergent bottle for the hull, a small piece of pallet wood for the deck, skewers for the masts, and heavy paper for the sails. Once the glue dried, we marched down to the pond and set sail just like the explorers of old. The wind was perfect — and our little ships floated proudly across the water. 🌊

🍽️ When we returned from our voyage, we enjoyed a true sailor’s feast of fish and chips, followed by Nathan’s birthday celebration! His cake was a treasure chest masterpiece made of chocolate cake, layered with fudge frosting, and trimmed with Twix bars and Peanut Butter Wafer Cookies for the edging. Inside, the chest was filled with silver and gold wrapped candies that sparkled like real treasure — a true death-by-chocolate delight! 🎂✨

It’s amazing how history, music, and reading can come together in one joyful day. Every song, story, and laugh reminds us that God made learning to be both meaningful and fun!

Until next time, keep your ship steady, your pencil sharp, and your heart joyful.
