Fun at Music and Me Academy

Saturday morning was filled with excitement—not only was it time for another fun group music lesson, but this one was extra special! The kids were going to make their very own Valentine’s Day Shakers. I love our group lessons, and I had a feeling this would be a winning craft, but ultimately, the kids would decide that for themselves. Click here to watch a video!

A Morning Filled with Music

We kicked off the day with our action-packed music lesson, where students learned to:
🎵 Play the desk bells
🎵 Read rhythms
🎵 Identify colors, note names, and basic music theory

Here’s what we covered in just 30 minutes:

  • The Wheels on the Bus
  • Baby Shark
  • Mozart’s Allegro in B – an easy performance
  • I’m a Nut – a fun children’s song using call-and-response and clapping
  • Two “Sweet Beats” Exercises:
    • Beet and Pineapple – teaching quarter notes and triplets
    • Beet, Melon, and Watermelon – introducing quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes
  • Music Theory Focus: Learning the note B – associated with the color pink, the number 7, and the Solfege syllable “Ti”

To reinforce the lesson, each student received a seven-page activity booklet to complete at home. I can’t wait to see the pictures they send of their finished worksheets!

Each student also received two sugar cookies—one shaped like a heart for Valentine’s Day and another shaped like a purple bell, tying into our music theme. It was a fun little treat to celebrate their hard work and creativity!

Valentine’s Day Shaker Crafting Time

The second half of our class was spent making our Valentine’s Day Shakers for February. I had made a shaker in advance to show the class what we were creating, and they loved the idea!

With only one glue gun available, my oldest student, Nathan, stepped up and did all the gluing to help the other students. Way to go, Nathan! His help made the crafting process much smoother and quicker for everyone.

This part of the lesson was full of energy—so many questions, fun chatter, and even spontaneous bursts of singing from the earlier lesson. Watching the older students help the younger ones and seeing everyone’s creativity shine brought so much joy to my heart.

Each child had the same supplies, but their shakers turned out completely unique, reflecting their own imagination. You’ll see in the pictures just how much fun they had!

As the class wrapped up and everyone headed home, one of my students, Hunter, turned to his mom and said, “She gave us a lot of stuff!” 😆 His words made me smile because, yes, they did get a lot—music, crafts, cookies, and most importantly, a fun and memorable experience!
