Unboxing Desk Bells: A Fun Teaching Tool for Kids

Good morning, friends! Today, I am excited to share an unboxing of deskbells, one of the most important instruments I use when teaching kids music.

Why Deskbells Are Amazing for Teaching

I absolutely love using desk bells, especially during meet-and-greet sessions. When families come in, I have the bells set up along with sheet music on a stand. I ask the children, usually around 4 or 5 years old, if they’ve ever played an instrument. Most often, they say no.

I then point to the notes on the music and let them play, without telling them what song they’re playing. Afterward, I ask, “Do you recognize the song?” Their faces light up when they realize it was Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or I’m a Little Teapot.

This activity creates an instant connection as they recognize a familiar song they’ve just played themselves! Desk bells are such a powerful teaching tool for children of all ages—and even for parents.

Parents, You Can Join Too!

In many of my classes, parents join in with their children. Some parents come in saying they’ve never played music before, but after just a few lessons, they’re playing along beautifully. They can even play classical music and keep perfect timing! It’s incredible to watch.

Benefits for Young Learners

Desk bells are perfect for even the youngest students—ages 18 months to 2 years. They help children:

  • Learn colors
  • Develop rhythm
  • Practice counting
  • Recognize letter names

With just a few lessons, even toddlers can start to grasp these concepts. Parents often tell me how much their children progress at home, working alongside siblings who might be learning piano or guitar with me.

Affordable and Easy to Start

If you’re looking for a musical instrument for your child, desk bells are an excellent option. At around $60 for a set of eight, they are affordable and accessible. Plus, they teach foundational music skills, such as playing individual notes and chords.

If you have more than one child, consider buying multiple sets. They can play together as a duet, with one child playing the melody while another plays the chords. For larger families, everyone can join in, making music a fun group activity.

Exploring the Bells

Each bell is color-coded, with corresponding notes:

  • C (Red): “Do”
  • D (Orange): “Re”
  • E (Yellow): “Mi”
  • F (Green): “Fa”
  • G (Teal): “Sol”
  • A (Purple): “La”
  • B (Pink): “Ti”
  • High C (Red): “Do”

These bells align perfectly with solfege hand signs, making them great for teaching scales and melodies.

Music Lessons with Miss Brenda

I use these bells in both in-person and online lessons. If you’re looking for a music teacher for your child, I’d love to help them start their musical journey. Classes are open to the whole family for a one-time fee, so everyone can participate and learn together.
